I did some research on which clay to use and I really loved this Creative Paper Clay. The texture feels great and I know that my DIY spring napkin rings will be nice and sturdy for years to come. They turned out so cute, I will for sure be putting these out every Easter. You will too.
STEPS
1 – Grab some clay and knead it a little bit to make it pliable on your work surface. Roll into a ball, about the size of a golf ball to help you visualize the proper amount needed. Remember to work quickly, as the clay will dry out.
*Tip: To store the paper clay, only remove the sections you will be working with at the time. Leave the remainder in the package. Be sure to really squish it down to pack it in tight. I use a mini bag sealing tool found on Amazon or you can find one at Hobby Lobby as well. Don’t have that? Use a chip clip instead. Then place it in a plastic bag – be sure to take out all the air. Finally, put in Tupperware to keep fresh and to help your clay will to not dry out.
2 – Flatten with hand on work board. Use a rolling pin to even it out, and maintain a thickness of about ⅛ to ¼ of an inch into a log-like shape. I like it a little thicker. Your flattened log of clay should be 6 inches long and 2 inches wide. Remember to keep even pressure as you roll to maintain consistent thickness in your clay.
3 – Trim away any excess with your exacto knife, using your straight edges on your work board as a guide. Do this on all 4 sides of your clay. Place your excess parts right back into your sealed container to keep it from drying out.
4 – Grab your toilet roll to create the diameter of the circle for your napkin ring. Place it on your flattened clay and begin rolling it onto the roll to form your ring. Use your silicone brushes, if you have them to help pinch, push, rub, and manipulate clay to complete your seal for the DIY napkin ring. Spray on a bit of water and rub with your fingers to smooth out the clay and create a more finished look. Let it rest on toilet paper roll for a bit.
5 – Create a fatter lip on your ring, by softly pushing the end of your brush under clay. Play with it and have fun. Spritzing water where needed, but be careful not to oversaturate your clay.
6 – Now you must determine what simple 3-letter word you want on your spring home decor clay napkin rings. I like HOP and EGG. You can have your word wrap around your napkin ring if you like, but I like the look of just 3. Maybe if you are feeling brave, you can squeeze on the 4-letter word PRAY. Other word ideas: fun, lamb, God, love, rise, grow, and peep. Also, if you would rather not have words in your napkin rings, use your favorite Easter bunny, chick, or flower stamp. Or, you could even use a doily to add some texture and fanciness.
7 – Grab your clean stamps in one hand. NO INK ON THEM! Slide your fingers from the other hand into the toilet paper roll to provide support and resistance in the clay to get your best stamped look. Eyeball and press it in. You can press them in on a straight horizontal line in your clay or at an angle. It’s up to you. Tip* Don’t worry if the square edge from your stamp indents into your clay. It will still look cute.
8 – Carefully slide off the toilet paper roll and check if your seem is nice and thick. Since we are using paper clay, it will be sturdier. You can use air dry clay, but they won’t last as long.
9 – Make as many rings as you need to complete your Easter dinner table. The more, the merrier, or simple and sweet.
10 – Once you have all of your rings formed and stamped, you will place them on a tray in a COLD oven at 200 degrees for 15 minutes. If they are still wet, turn the oven off and allow them to sit in the oven longer. When they are ready to paint, they will be white in color. Make sure they are dry before painting.
11 – Squirt some of your Easter color paints (baby pink, aqua sky, lemon yellow, purple cow are what I used) on your plate. Get creative with your painting and cover them completely, both outside and inside to give them a finished look. You may need to touch up some areas in little cracks or crevices, so keep your paints handy. If you like the patina look on your creations, you could use that method instead.
12 – Dry with your heat gun to speed up the process. If you love them bright, stop now! If you want to help mute the bright colors to help your letters stand out, grab your white paint to create a faux wash. Spray some water directly into your white to water it down and just softly brush it on your napkin rings. Use your baby wipes to softly brush and dab it down to help the letters really pop.
13 – Once painted and have dried overnight, to finalize the look, grab your Triple Thick Crystal Clear Glaze by Krylon and give the rings a good spray. Remember to be in a well ventilated area for this step.
14 – Grab your napkins and get rolling. Simply insert your rolled napkin inside of your adorable Spring Napkin Ring to complete the look. Be prepared to hear all your friends and family tell you how much they love them! Because, they will. They most definitely will.
This can really be two crafts in one because guess what! When not being used as a napkin ring, these would be cute Easter Egg holders! I love it. A spring DIY craft on a budget with multiple uses. Whatever you create will be perfect! Just have fun with it, and always remember to Bee Inspired.
