DIY Sunflower Decor

You know my love for SUNFLOWERS runs deep, almost as deep as their roots. Making all things sunflowers make me happy, can’t you tell? Maybe you should check out some of these other Sunflower DIY crafts we have made before – Sunflower Lazy Susan, Dollar Tree Fall Centerpiece, & Sunflower Wreath DIY.
I absolutely love this Sunflower DIY project. It is perfect for budget-friendly decor inside your home, as the materials are not exactly suitable for outdoor elements. I can’t wait to add it to my mantle to help bring more of the fall vibe to my living room.
This simple, affordable, and quite frankly out of my comfort zone craft, was so much fun. Working with resin is new for me, but I am finding out that I love it. If you are excited to give it a try, then grab your supplies, and let’s get started.
SUPPLIES NEEDED TO MAKE YOUR OWN DIY CRUSHED GLASS RESIN SUNFLOWER DECOR:
- Sunflower Digital Scrapbook Paper Bundle
- Sunflower – Crafty Dealz
- UV Resin & Light
- Decorative Filler (Clear and Aqua)- by Ashland @ Michael’s
- DecoArt Acrylic Paint – Warm White
- White paper – 65 lb.
- 100 Grit Sanding Block
- Mod Podge
- Paint Brush
- Foam Brush
- Puppy Pads
STEPS WITH A CRICUT:
1 – Get your Sunflower wood cutout and sand it a bit to help with coverage.
2 – With a 100 fine grit sanding block, lightly rub over your wood. It helps to smooth it out so there are no paint clumps.
3 – Wipe your wood clean of any debris.
4 – Next, completely cover your sunflower cutout with a coat of white paint. Tip* Doesn’t have to be perfect because we will cover it with paper, but I like it to have a background of white..

5 – Let it dry completely. Use a heat gun to speed up the process.
6 – Use any circular object to trace a center for your sunflower with a pencil. I used an old small paint can. Tip* An idea to consider. Paint the center of your sunflower brown to give you a more natural look with your resin later on in the project.
7 – Use craft paper to make a template for your petals. I eyeball it because I am not precise, but you can be as precise as you want. Use the center as your guide and determine your petal shape.

8 – From your printed Sunflower Bundle (follow the link to learn exactly how to print), pull 4 different pages out you like best. I am making my set of petals using this recipe, 2, 2, 2, & 3 in order to complete all 9 petals of my sunflower. Tip* You determine if you want all the petals to be the same or a mix and match like me. Have fun creating your personalized look. Also, you can use any type of scrapbook paper… I just like mine the best! Ha!
9 – Begin cutting out your petals.
10 – Add a bit of Mod Podge to a plate to add to your foam brush. Add directly to your wooden sunflower and then add your petals, one at a time. Pay attention to your pattern as you place. It is okay if you cover a little bit of the center as it will later be covered with your resin. Allow your papers to hang off the edges of your petals. We will address that excess later. Tip* You can use the Mod Podge Dry technique instead if you prefer.
11- Be sure your petals are adhered completely, using a bit of Mod Podge on your fingers to run over those seams of paper.
12 – Use a heat gun to speed up the drying process of your Mod Podge.

13 – To remove the excess scrapbook paper on petal edges, use your sanding block to add a bit of a rustic look. Tip* Make sure your paper is completely dry in order to not accidentally tear your petals.
14 – Grab your UV Resin kit, adding a tiny bit on the center of your Sunflower center. Place your decorative filler (which looks like crushed glass) laying flat to help it adhere the easiest. Add a bit more resin, following the directions on the box to properly complete the project. Use the UV Light in the kit or you can let it set in the sun. Tip* You could paint the center of your circle brown if you would prefer a more natural look to shine through your resin center.

15 – Use a flat edge tool to help your resin stay in the center by working around in your circular motion. Tip* Be patient with your resin, because it looks like a hot mess, to begin with, but will look amazing once it hardens.
16 – To finish it off, lightly brush the resin over the rest of your petals, so it will have the same shine as your center.

17 – You can add a hanger device on the back if you would prefer to hang this. Mine will happily take place on my mantle.
