SUPPLIES NEEDED TO MAKE YOUR DIY FALL BANNER:
- 2 packs of Wooden Pumpkins “Color your Own Ornaments” – Dollar Tree
- Copy paper
- Mod Podge
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Iron
- Coffee Filters or Parchment Paper
- Chip or foam brushes
- Gator Zip Sanding block – Microgrip Detail Sander
- Nail file
- Waverly Paint: Green and Pumpkin Paint
- Fall Fabric leftovers
- Thick Jute
- Honey Hush Pom Pom Maker – Etsy
- Hot glue
- Little Clips (Dollar Tree)
- Puppy Pads
STEPS:
1 – Grab your 2 packs of Dollar Tree wooden craft pumpkins and set them out on your puppy pad.
2 – Make sure you have your Fall Printable, “HELLO FALL,” ready to go as well. Tip* Do not worry if they are a little bigger than your pumpkin. It will be ok.
3 – Shake up your Mod Podge so it is even and consistent. Pour out a bit of Mod Podge to apply your wooden pumpkins, doing the dry technique for this craft. Brush on a coat directly, making sure it is completely covered. Tip* Look for a glare to make sure you didn’t miss anywhere. Fill in any spots.
4 – Set aside to dry and begin cutting out your printable. Tip* I am working on 1 word at a time for this project, just repeating the steps to complete.
5 – Your wooden pumpkins should be nice and dry now. Tip* We want no glares now.
6 – Grab your pumpkin printable and align it onto the wooden pumpkins. Remember it is okay if they are not the same size. Be sure to place them so your letters are centered and lined up. With your warm iron, and parchment paper or coffee filter on top of the printable, reactivate the Mod Podge with the heat so it adheres to it. Tip* This will remove the ripples in your paper. Repeat for all of your pumpkins.
7 – If you have any wood showing as I did on my stem, just paint it in with a little paint to cover that up.
8 – Trim excess paper from your pumpkin if needed.
9 – With your nail file or sanding block, rub-down the edges removing excess sections and deep into the crevices of the pumpkin’s grooves.
10 – Once you have completed all the letters of “HELLO FALL,” lay them out on your puppy pad. Tip* I do not poke out the tiny hole on the crafts, because I think it hangs funny. Set aside.
11 – Plug in your hot glue gun so it is ready to work. While waiting, grab any of your fall fabric leftovers to get started on your pom-poms for the banner. Tip* If you don’t like pom poms, skip this step. Add beads, ribbons, etc to make it your own. Just have fun with it.
12 – With your craft scissors, snip your fabric about 1” and then rip to get your strips. Say that 10 times fast. I like them longer so they are roughly 24”. I used 4 different fabrics but used 6 strips to make 1 pom poms. You can’t go wrong! Repeat so you will have 3 sets, with 18 strips in all.
13 – Grab one of my favorite gadgets ever made, Honey Hush Pom Pom Maker, found on Etsy. It will be your best friend to make DIY pom poms. Since we are working with fabric I use the 3” side and with 1 ribbon at a time, layering my ribbons onto the gadget. Wrap around, alternating your ribbon patterns.
14 – Once all wrapped on there, grab some jute and tie with a double knot, before pulling tight in the center. Remove ribbons from the gadget and it should appear as a little bow tie. Then with your craft scissors, cut ribbons on sides and shake, fluff, and manipulate the ribbons so they create your pom-pom effect. Tip* Trim stragglers if needed using, 2 heavy coasters that are the size you want for your pom-poms. Repeat so you have 3.
15 – Grab some jute to make tiny little hand bows to add to the stem of your pumpkins and hot glue on. Tip* If you want to add moss or ribbons instead, you do you! I am gluing right over the spot where the little hole is.
16 – Create a tiny loop with your jute and hot glue on the back of your pumpkins. Tip* This is how I will hang my pumpkins, so they don’t twist on my banner.
15 – Now let’s build our banner, by working backward with our letters. L, L, A, F, O, L, L, E, and H! Slide them down as you work making your thick jute the length you need to hang on your mantle. Tip* I am measuring about 60” for my length. Add a little wood bead in between each letter if you like!
16 – To help my pumpkins stay in place and not spin on my mantle, I use a little clothespin from Dollar Tree. Mine happen to be black for this project. Feel free to paint them orange or green, if you like that look better.
17 – Once you have positioned your pumpkins in the place they need to be, tie on your 3 different pom poms. I placed one on each edge and 1 in the middle between your 2 words. It should follow this pattern: Pom Pom + HELLO + Pom Pom + FALL + Pom Pom.
18 – The best part of this DIY project is hanging it up on your mantle, so it is no longer naked!
