Making a DIY scarecrow is easier than you think. I decided I needed something cute in my tier tray and this was the perfect fall decor! I will show you step by step how you can make one for your home.
Let’s make this Fall scarecrow
Supplies needed
1 piece of pine 1×4 cut to 5″
2 – 12 inch paint stirrers
Waverly Paint in the color Pumpkin and Plaster
Decoart Paint – Sea Breeze and Burt Umber
Googly Eyes from Dollar Tree
Embellishments
First, we will start with painting our wood. You can paint one coat of Waverly Plaster or if you want more of a full coverage, you can paint two coats.
When I was making this scarecrow, I knew that I wanted to add shiplap because it would give that special touch the piece of wood needed. So, we are going to paint some “faux” shiplap. You will need to draw lines on wood using a pencil, I found that if you press hard enough you will indent lines into the wood, which makes it look more realistic. Then, using a paint pen – I drew lines and then quickly wiped them off using a baby wipes. You’re not looking to wipe the lines off completely, but instead give it that shiplap look. Doesn’t your heart go pitter-patter like mine when you see this?
Now, let’s move on to our cute scarecrow’s hat! The hat has to be my favorite part of this quick and easy DIY. Depending on the size of your piece of wood, cut the paint sticks so that your hat is just tall enough. The paint sticks cut easily using scissors, you can find the ones I used here. Once cut, I used my baby wipe and applied the Decoart Burt Umber. Using a baby wipe is similar to staining and is super easy to do.Once your sticks are dry, we can add some more fun colors. I simply dry brushed the color Pumpkin and Sea Breeze. Now dry brushing is just that, applying a small amount of paint to the brush, wiping some of it off, and then applying it to the paint stick. You can check out the live here.
Putting the fall scarecrow together is super easy. First, hot glue the 3 smaller paint sticks. Then, I added some raffia before gluing on the brim of the hat. You can have fun with it, add anything you like to make it your own!
