Have you tried pallet knife painting before? It’s not as hard as you may think.  With Fall around the corner I decided to do this DIY pallet knife Sunflower painting . I chose a sunflower because it reminds me of my mother.  My mom always had sunflowers in the garden and she just loved them.   I’m going to show you how I made one using a simple Dollar Tree canvas and some other supplies.

Supplies you will need:

8×10 Dollar Tree Canvas

Paint Sticks 12 inches , amount needed depends on the canvas size you choose

Deco Art Paint in the color, Black, Burnt Umber, Cardium Yellow and Antique Gold

Pallet Knives

Cornstarch- Optional

So let’s get started making this diy pallet knife sunflower painting

Prepare your canvas- I just take my an exacto knife and cut around the outside edges of the canvas, I do not remove the staples. You can absolutely remove the staples if you want the back of your have a cleaner look. Otherwise I just cut the canvas off and sand the back.

Once the canvas is removed I use Deco Art Burnt Umber with a baby wipe and “stain” the frame.  I use the same technique on the paint stick before cutting them to fit the back of the Dollar Tree canvas.

Let’s get to painting the sunflower

I started by using the burnt Umber, I will say I did decide to add cornstarch to my paint to slightly thicken it.  This worked great however, the paint did crack a bit after drying.  Now if you like that worn, not so perfect look, go for it.  Otherwise, Decoart paint has a thicker consistency and this would still work.

Pallet knife painting can be so much fun, there isn’t a right or wrong way of doing it.  I added the pedals and used a mix of Cardium Yellow and Antique Gold and alternated the pedal colors. You can see how I create it live on Facebook here.
