SUPPLIES NEED TO MAKE YOUR DIY PATRIOTIC SIGN
- Wooden Trays pack of 5
- Air dry clay
- Sanding block 240 grit
- Dixie Bell Voodoo Gel – Tobacco Road
- Baby wipes
- Craft Foil sheets
- Foil Adhesive glue
- Heat gun* (optional)
- DIY Clay Based Paint
- Star Embellishments Candle Holders
STEPS
1 – Grab your wooden tray and your air-dry clay. You will insert it into the openings on the sides of your clay. Push it in nice and firm. Even it out with your fingers and/or a flat tool to fill in that gap. With an exacto knife, trim off excess. Repeat on both sides of your tray.
2 – Put it aside to dry. Tip* If the clay is cold to the touch, it is still not completely dry. Let it sit for at least 3-4 hours. To be extra safe, let it dry overnight.
3 – Once the clay is dry, grab your sanding block and smooth it out. Have that clay become one with the wood. It doesn’t have to be perfectly smooth. Remember to do the inside and outside of your trays.
4 – Using about 9-10 Nelson Wood Shims, you will be able to work with the smallest tray from the Amazon pack. Work with your tray going vertically.
5 – You will need to trim the shims to fit as close as possible, so pay attention to the thin side and thick side of your shim. The easiest part to cut is your thin side, so place it on your tray, marking with a pen the exact area you will need to trim off to fit inside your piece. Tip* Mark one shim and use it as a template to complete all the others.
6 – Trim your shims to fit. Cut carefully with scissors. Use those muscles. Throw away your wooden excess parts or save them for another project.
7 – With gloves on, grab your Dixie Bell Voodoo Gel and spread a little on your wooden tray with a baby wipe. A little bit goes a long way. This is an easy and quick way to stain.
8 – Be sure to cover your whole tray. This will transform the look of your wooden tray!
9 – Grab your shims and your hot glue. Poke them in one at a time. Remember to alternate the thicker side and the thinner side as you place them in your tray to give you a shiplap look. A little gap is fine in between each shim.
10 – Grab your foil adhesive glue and a brush. Brush the sides of your tray; it will take a bit of time to get nice and tacky. So don’t give up.
11 – Use your heat gun to speed up the drying process.
12 – Grab your foil sheets and place them on the side of your tray that is nice and tacky. Use a flat edge to smooth it out, and then simply remove your foil to see the fancy design leftover. Repeat on all the sides of your tray. Tip* Be sure to cover up all the sticky parts. Add more foil if necessary.
13 – Grab your star embellishments and hot glue. If they are heavy, use E6000 to keep them nice and secure.
14 – This rustic, DIY patriotic sign is an excellent addition to your home! Now just decide where to have it on display.
