STEPS To make your Patriotic Decor
– Grab your burlap roll and cut it to fit the size of your table.
– Grab your canvas drop cloth and lay flat.
– Grab the Patriotic Printables you’ve downloaded on regular printer paper. Be sure your ink is dry so it does not smear on this project. Trim excess paper. You should use about 8-10 of your printables depending on the size of your table runner. Tip* The possibilities for this project are endless. Using any 3×3 image! You could have them printed and applied following these same steps. Possibly even use your children’s artwork to display along with their signature and age too, on your DIY table runner. What an adorable keepsake for you and your family.
– Grab your aerosol hair spray and lightly spray over your printables to help seal the ink from smearing later in your project. Be sure to let them dry completely.
– Layout your printables on a drop cloth to have a flatter surface to mod podge your printables onto since the burlap texture will come through on your printable. These printables will look like patches on your table runner. Leaving a bit of space between each printable, mod podge the back of printables first with a brush, and then flip to the front onto your canvas.
– Once you have completed the backs of all of your printables and placed them on to drop cloth, go back over the fronts of your printables and mod podge. Lightly brush over the ink, and thanks to the hair spray, the ink should not be smearing.
– Use a heat up to speed up the drying process.
– Once your patches are dry, cut them out with good fabric scissors with a rough cut to begin. Leave as much drop cloth as you like for your patchwork look. Tip* Use scalloped scissors to add a fun detail to your pliable, printable patches.
– You can create a frayed look with your canvas if you prefer. Rip up to your preference. Set aside.
– Grab your burlap table runner. Focusing on the ends, just pull out a few strings at a time to create a fringed edge to add some texture. Tip* Be sure to save the strings you’ve pulled aside for a crafting option we can use later.*
– Eyeballing where you would like your patches to be placed, create a visual plan. I personally know that I will have other decors in the center of my table, so I will plan on putting my patriotic patchwork pieces towards the ends.
– *Optional Idea: With the extra burlap strings we just pulled aside, you could stitch your patches directly to your table runner with a big needle. Be as creative as you want!
– To attach your patches the most effectively, grab your spray adhesive and over your puppy pad/workspace, spray the back of your patch completely. Quickly place on your burlap in your desired placement. Press firmly to the burlap. The coarse texture of burlap and spray adhesive work well together. Mix and match and have fun with your DIY design.
– Repeat on both ends of your table runner. Tip* If you wanted to add more design on your burlap, you could add some stars, USA, any desired design really using markers, paint, stamps, stencils, etc.
– Grab your pom-poms and spray adhesive. Spray along the edges of your table runner, a small section at a time. Next, simply add your pom-poms to the side by pressing firmly to adhere. Be sure your pom poms are facing out away from your burlap to add a fun textured edge. Tip* Add tassels to the end.
AND DONE! Nice work. This was so easy to create and I hope you had as much fun as I did. Remember, this DIY table runner can be recreated for so many different occasions. I am excited to see what you do with this little bit of inspiration. Happy crafting.
