DIY Scrabble Letter Board

Who remembers spelling out fun messages with your Scrabble Board Letters as a child? I know I couldn’t help but do this whenever the game was out at home. Even now as an adult, I still love to create a sweet little note to brighten someone’s day with my DIY scrabble letters. With this thrift store find, you can create this easy DIY craft that brings the best of both worlds, sweet memories and sweet messages.

DIY SCRABBLE LETTER BOARD SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  • Thrift Store Letter Board
  • Waverly Plaster Chalk Paint – you choose the color
  • Painting brush (angle brush suggested)
  • Sanding Block
  • Rub on Transfer Paper (Sunnyscopa found on Amazon)
  • Dixie Bell Gator Hide (Sealor)
  • Ruler
  • Exacto Knife
  • Heat Gun (optional)
  • Inkjet printer

STEPS TO MAKE A DIY SCRABBLE LETTER BOARD

Step 1 – Clean the wooden letter board with soap and water. I like to use a little Dixie Bell White Lightning Cleaner in a spray bottle to really get it clean, but it is not necessary.

Step 2 – Paint the 1st coat with your chalk paint. You can spritz the paint with a water bottle to make sure your paint is not too thick and to create less brush strokes. Don’t worry about the back, just yet. You can get to that later if you want. Paint the entire board. If you have a heat gun, use it to speed up the paint drying process. If it is not perfect, that is okay. Distressed looks are in, so don’t stress! Complete your second 2nd coat to have an even finish on your board.

Step 3 – Once the letter board is dry, distress it with a sanding block – focus around the edges of your board to allow the wood look to come through. Beat it up as much as you want. It is your creation, so have fun with it.

Step 4 – Rub board to remove excess debris to allow for a clean placement of transfer.

Step 5 – Create your beehive transfer image by grabbing our download above and using an INKJET printer. Apply transfer with this Beehive image, or one of your choosing. Use a ruler to help aid the process of a smooth and flat rub on transfer application.

Step 6 – Use an exacto knife to trim the excess of your transfer to fit on your letter board. It is okay if the blank space of your transfer part is showing on your board. But if you prefer not to see that, you can simply take some paint to blend in that negative space.

Step 7 – Seal your piece to make it last for years to come.

The best part, place your DIY scrabble letters on your board. Be sure to leave a sweet message for those you love.
