DIY Spring Planter

It’s only February, but I know most are craving for Spring to come already.  We live in Florida so our winters are always nice.  However, being that I’m originally from Illinois, I know what it feels like to want to start wanting to decorate for Spring.  This DIY spring planter was the start to transitioning to Spring in our home.

I was happy when I decided to use a paper mache Christmas tree I had left over from the holidays. With just cutting out the bottom, I was able to get the cone shape I needed. I simply took an exacto knife and cut it out.

Now, I wanted the cone to look like a galvanized planter, so with some paint I made that happen.  To get the galvanized look for this spring planter, I started by using a stencil brush and stippling the Waverly Silver Lining paint on the upper portion of the cone.  Since I was using scrap paper to cover the rest, I didn’t need to paint the entire cone. After Silver Lining was applied, I added Mineral and the color ink.  You can start to see it come together, but keep playing with the colors until you are happy with it.  I did also add Waverly white to add even move dimension to the cone.  It honestly looks like a galvanized planter.

painting done!

Now I could have painted the entire cone, however,  adding a fun pattern scrapbook paper added to the beauty of this DIY.  Just apply mod podge to the cone and gently lay it on top of the paper. Apply more mod podge to the paper and then roll up the paper around the cone.  My 12×12 sheet of paper didn’t cover the entire cone, but instead gave it a cool design.  Apply a top coat of mod podge to seal the paper to the cone.

Now you need to hang up your planter. With hot glue I added jute to the inside of the cone. Another option is to poke holes in the cone and poke your jute through it and tie a knot.  You will find what works for you.

You are almost there making your own spring planter!

To finish off the galvanized planter, I added a pretty flower I had in my craft supplies.  Cut a piece of foam, insert it in the cone and simply add any flowers you want.  I love tulips so these were the perfect flowers to give me the spring feeling I was looking for.

This DIY Spring planter seemed to have been made for the shutter I bought a flea market.  I hung it from a finial and there you go!

You can watch how I made it LIVE here.

I hope this inspired you to try making your own spring decor.  If you enjoyed this DIY you may enjoy this DIY Farmhouse Vignette.

Happy crafting!
