Dollar Tree Patriotic Mason Jar

Crafts like this get your creative juices flowing without breaking the bank. To me, that is perfect because that leaves you plenty of cash to host all those backyard BBQs with your family and friends. And this DIY summer sign is perfect to have on display in your home, front entryway, or even on your backyard dining table paired with a vase full of white flowers. Don’t forget to have that tiny American flag sticking out too!
If you liked this craft so much, and want to do something similar, well you are in luck! Be sure to check out another one of my DIY tutorials using this same exact sign from Dollar Tree. It has a cute Lemon and Bees theme. It looks fabulous on your front door inside a large green wreath. Let me know which one you like better! Happy crafting y’all!
SUPPLIES NEEDED TO MAKE YOUR DOLLAR TREE PATRIOTIC MASON JAR:
- Dollar Tree Mason Jar Summer Sign
- Dollar Tree Paper Straws – Patriotic Pack – 2-3 packs (Multiple options for this craft)
- Letters – (Michaels)
- Beads
- Metal Ribbon (Hobby Lobby)
- Ribbon
- Acrylic paint – Black, True Blue, and Extreme Sheen Silver by Deco Art
- Ribbons of all sorts: Pom Pom, Patriotic patterns and colors
- String/Jute
- Chip or paint brushes
- Scissors
- Exacto knife
- Coffee Filter
- Hot glue
- Heat Gun
- Baby Wipes
- Puppy Pads
STEPS:
1 – Grab your Summer Sign from Dollar Tree and remove the attached leaves on the front. Also, be sure to cut off the string used for hanging. We will create a much cuter one later. Tip* Use a heat gun to help you remove the sticker if necessary.
2 – On the backside of your sign, apply a coat of black paint, focusing only on the top rim of the jar. Don’t forget to paint the sides of the rim as well. Dry with a heat gun.
3 – Next, with a makeup sponge, carefully dab some silver paint on top of your black-rimmed mason jar to give you a metal look. This is the alternative if you don’t have the metal ribbon. Dry with a heat gun.
4 – Those with metal ribbons, you will lay out on top of the rim and cut leaving edges to easily wrap around the top to help secure the ribbon. Hot glue one strip at a time. Should require 3 strips of metal ribbon. Flatten as you work. Bend around the sign to hold tight to the sign. Tip* Be extra careful because that metal heats up quickly with hot glue on there! Trust me.
5 – Grab your beads to begin to make the hanger. Set out a few – 5 of each color, red, white, and blue. If you don’t have blue like me, grab your True Blue acrylic paint and your coffee filter. With gloves on rubbing your paint inside your coffee filter all over your beads adding a fun textured look to your beads. Set aside to dry. Tip* If you don’t have a coffee filter, you can hand paint your beads as well.

6 – Determine the amount of string necessary for the length of the sign and cut. Hot glue one side to thicken it up so beads do not fall through later. Set aside.
7 – Next grab your patriotic straws and begin creating a visual image of a flag for your patriotic sign. Work first with all of your blue, allowing them to hang off the side. If you have 2 packs from the Dollar store, as you lay them all out, you should have 3 blue straws leftover, not being used for this craft. Tip* Do not worry about cutting them or anything just yet.
8 – Remove straws now that you have your visual image and let’s begin to hot glue. Start right under your metal rim to begin, only going halfway to resemble the blue on our American flag. Hot glue dries fast so get those straws on quickly. Lay down 6 straws first and then begin shifting your straws over to cover some of the handle. Don’t forget to hot glue on the handle edge to secure down your hold straw. Use your excess piece to fill in any gaps on the handle if needed. Tip* If you are EXTRA, make sure your straws are lined up so the waves are exact. I am not a perfectionist, but if you are, then you do you!

9 – Repeat with the red on the other side of your jar to complete your flag look. Your extra pieces that are left over will be used to fill in the sections on the handle area. Trim straws as you work if needed, before they touch the hot glue. Tip* If you want to cover the ENTIRE jar using the straw look, you just need 3 packs of straws instead. Repeat to finish all the way to the bottom of your sign. You will then skip the steps that require you to paint the bottom section of your sign.
10 – Continue adding your straws all the way down to just under the handle of your jar if you only have 2 packs of straws! Tip* Do not worry about cutting any excess hanging off of the sides until your glue has dried.
11 – Grab your True Blue and a small paintbrush and cover that empty bottom section of your sign with a thin coat. Don’t forget to paint those sides of your sign without the straws to give it a completed section.
12 – With one of your patriotic ribbons, add a thin strip just under your straws and on the bottom of your jar to tie the whole sign together. Hot glue and trim edges with scissors.
13 – Now that your straws and glue have dried a bit, use your scissors to carefully cut the excess from the sides. Use an exacto knife and tiny sharp scissors to help in the inside section of your handle if needed.
14 -With your cleaned-up edges from the straws, touch up the edges with your blue paint along the sign to complete the look. Stay patient.
15 – Let’s add our USA letters from Michaels in the bottom blue painted section with hot glue. Use a heat glue to speed up the gluing drying process. Tip* If you used 3 packs of straws, add your letters however you like best on your jar covered in straws.

16 – Let’s add a bow. Grab your Patriotic colored ribbons of all sorts, pom pom ribbon, and cut off about 10-12 inches. I have about 6 of each kind of ribbon for a big full bow. I am not exact so you don’t have to be either. Layer your ribbons and create a criss-cross in your pile. Tie your ribbons together in the center with your jute to secure them. Spread out your ribbons and maneuver them to look extra cute. Add dovetails to the ends by cutting ribbons, and shortening length if needed. (I am not a bow maker, so if you know how to do it better, then PLEASE do it!)

17 – Hot glue your bow up top on the metal-rimmed sections of your jar.
18 – Let’s get back to the hanger. Grab your beads and your string. Add them in your red, white, and blue pattern. Tip* Use a needle on your string to help you add your beads a little faster. Tie the end so you have a nice strong knot. Another tip* If you prefer not to have a hanger, that is just fine. You could add this to a large green wreath to add to your door instead!
19 – Hot glue the string on the back of your top of the sign-holding it in place. Tip* Apply a tiny piece of your scraps of ribbon and place it over your hot glue jute/string to help it really secure the sign.

WOW! It looks amazing. The waving of the flag created from those straws… I can’t get over it. You guys this craft is so stinking cute and festive for all those patriotic holidays that we love to celebrate so much! And the price for this cutie can’t be beat.
I was able to put this sign together for less than $10 dollars all with stuff that was already around in my personal craft stash. I know you are going to love decorating your home with this sign. Hang it, place it, display it. Whatever you decide, you can’t go wrong! I am so glad you were here to craft with me today, and I look forward to our next crafting project together. Don’t you?
