Steps to making your own DIY Shabby Chic Bathroom Decor
1 – Grab Sweet Pickins Milk Paint and a large mixing/measuring bowl. With a 1 to 1 ratio, take 1/3 cup of your milk paint powder and 1/3 cup of water. Mix up to form a paint-like liquid. Tip* Only make what you will use for your project because it will spoil in liquid form.
2 – Paint your oval wooden cutting boards completely with your milk paint and brush. Tip* Milk paint will chip/crack and add a fun texture. It will be a distressed/vintage look when finished. Don’t worry.
3 – Paint one side at a time and let dry completely. Use a heat gun, if you have one, to speed up the process.
4 – Grab your sanding block – 120 grit, and smooth out your cutting boards when dry. Go over all of the cutting board surfaces.
5 – Wipe with a dry cloth.
6 – Grab your Iron Orchid Designs (IOD) Molds and IOD Clay. Work a tiny section in your hands to make it malleable, to fit into your mold. Tip* To make your clay pop out easier, grab some cornstarch and lightly cover the inside of your mold. The rim on the mold will give you a nice, crisp edge once you have added the clay inside your mold completely. Smooth out your mold with a flat edge. Carefully remove by pressing on the back of your moldboard and popping it out.

7 – Typically, you want them to be dry before working with them on your project. If you choose to work with them right away, be extra careful because they are still soft. Place your molds aside until you are ready to add to your project. Drying depends on how big and thick your clay piece is.
8 – Carefully paint your clay pieces with your milk paint. Completely cover to match the cutting boards.
9 – Wipe hands if you are a bit dirty with baby wipes.
10 – Grab the pretty paper of your choice and place it on top of your cutting board. Find the inside ridge of the cutting board and with an Exacto knife, trim the inside. This will give you a close cut to the shape. Tip* It doesn’t have to be perfect, so don’t fret.
11 – Grab your Mod Podge and a chip brush. We will be using the ironing technique*. Place Mod Podge on the inside circle of your cutting boards. With your heat gun, blow over the Mod Podge area. This helps to remove the wrinkles. Add your papers on top of dried Mod Podge. With parchment paper, place it on top of your pretty paper and iron over. This will leave a smooth surface on your cutting board. Do this step for both cutting boards.
12 – Grab your sanding block and rough up your cutting board on your paper edges, to give a more blended look into the paint.
13 – With a leather strap, or you can even use an old belt, trim off a tiny thin section using a roller cutter, about 3 inches long, and 1-2 centimeters wide. Twist into the tiny hole on top of your cutting board. Create a loop and hot glue on the back to hold it in place. Tip* Maybe try a leather shoelace too.
14 – To add your clay molds, use the Quick Thick Titebond or hot glue to add to the back of your clay molds. Use a popsicle stick to keep your fingers nice and safe. Carefully place onto your cutting boards in the center.
15 – To seal, spray with your Easy Peasy Wax spray from Dixie Bell. This will help keep your paint keep that beautiful pop you want.
Bonus Home decor on a budget Project:
With your little round cutting board in your pack and a great Goodwill find of a glass topper, you can create the ultimate simple home decor on a budget project. Add some faux moss or grass on top of your cutting board, along with a tiny succulent or flower inside the center. Place glass topper on top and secure with hot glue if you want it to be more permanent. Have fun with it. Maybe even a little figurine that is easy to change out through the seasons.
I hope you feel extra inspired and have fun crafting. Again, repeat after me, “I’d rather DIY it than buy it.”
