It’s that time to get started on making some Christmas decorations, no matter when you start putting up the Christmas tree in your home. This little red truck Christmas sign is the perfect enhancement to your Christmas decor.

There is a debate every year. And I won’t let you know where I stand on the topic. I simply want to know what your opinion may be. You may be wrong, you may be right. I may be wrong, I may be right. Either way, here is the topic for debate…When is it okay to start decorating for Christmas? You are either on “Team November 1st” or “Team After Thanksgiving.”
Whatever opinion you may have on the topic, it is never too early to begin crafting for Christmas. Can we agree on that at least? This DIY Christmas sign is so much fun. Just as much fun as the DIY Santa Sack we made!
In this DIY Christmas sign tutorial, I will teach you how to work with $0.98 window clings, instead of using a Cricut machine. I’ll give you tips and tricks all along the way too! This craft is festive, fun, and does not require you to fork out the big bucks. That is perfect since Christmas presents get pretty expensive.
Hey, this would even make the perfect Christmas gift. Just an idea, and I am full of ideas. Let’s get started making our cut Little Red Truck Christmas sign.
SUPPLIES NEED TO MAKE YOUR LITTLE RED TRUCK CHRISTMAS SIGN:
- Old wooden sign – 12 x 12 wood piece
- Acrylic Paints – Burnt Umber and Folk Art White
- Baby wipes
- Vaseline
- Putty knife – frosting tool with baking
- Sanding block – 100 grit
- Little Red Truck Christmas Window Clings – Walmart
- Snowman Style Window Clings – Walmart
- Matte Mod Podge
Steps
1 – To begin, wipe down your wooden board, while wearing gloves just to wipe off any excess debris. Tip* – Be creative and re-purpose a board from scrap wood, or even from your nearest thrift store.
2 – We will work on the first side of our board in the next few steps. Grab your baby wipes and a tiny bit of your Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint. Rub all over one side of your wooden board. Make sure it is dry before moving on.
3 – Don’t forget to get the sides of your sign.
4 – With Vaseline, rub it over the top of your wooden sign on edges where it would naturally wear. Randomly rub it in places on your board. This layer will help with a special technique creating a “Chippy look.” Tip* Don’t forget where you put it.
5- With your foam paintbrush, cover your wooden sign with your next color of paint. I used Folk Art paint, color White. Cover your board completely, even the sides.
6 – Use a heat gun to speed up the drying process.
7 – Add a second coat if needed. I needed 2 coats. Dry again completely.

8 – Once dry, flip the sign over to begin the 2nd side of your sign. Completely paint your board on that backside with your white Folkart Paint. Be sure to get in the corners and sides. Let it dry. Heat guns are your friend when crafting.
9 – Flip back over to the front of the sign. Grab your putty knife, frosting tool from the kitchen, or flat edge. Begin to scrape where you placed your Vaseline. This creates the “Chippy look” on your wooden board. Wipe off excess from the board to clean it up.
10 – Grab your hand sanding block, 100 grit, and rub it all over your board. Smooth it out with your sandpaper. This cleans up your painted wood and gives it a smooth work service. Wipe clean of any debris.
11- With your Red Truck window cling, determine where you want to place it on the front of your board. Have a visual game plan before you work.
12 – Apply a thin layer of Matte Mod Podge to the back of your window cling and place it onto the board. Then apply another layer of Mod Podge on top of that. This seals it to your board. Tip* – If you are not using the Matte Mod Podge, be sure to add a sealer over the top of your finished project so your sheen is consistent throughout.
13 – Repeat steps on the back of your board with your second set of window clings. Tip* – If you don’t want to have another Christmas theme, just use a snowman/winter theme instead. Window clings are the perfect alternative if you don’t have a printing machine, like a Cricut.
14 – You can stop here and your project will be complete. But if you want to add a little more, consider adding a cute handmade bow on top. Or, tie a ribbon so this can be a wall hanging sign, not just one to rest on your mantle. You could even hot glue on some pine for added dimension and festivity… the possibilities are endless. Be creative and have fun.
Can you believe it? A 2-sided sign all for less than $10 with supplies you would have in your crafting corner at home. Seems like a Christmas miracle. The beauty of the window clings is that they take out a lot of the hard work for you. No need to worry about buying a fancy printing machine, finding the file you want, cutting it, weeding it, etc. (Don’t get me wrong, I love my Cricut!) Window clings are just a happy alternative. Wouldn’t you agree?
