DIY Mini Biscuit Christmas Tree
One of my all-time favorite projects ever is the DIY Wood Biscuit Christmas Tree. It has been a favorite for so many and why wouldn’t it be?!? It is just so cute! So in honor of our Christmas in July, this little mini biscuit tree has just the right amount of Christmas inspiration and fun to amp up your Christmas decor this holiday season.
I want to share this project with you and encourage you to make it your own. You are all so crafty and I love “Beeing Inspired” by you too! Be creative, make it your own, and have fun with it!
SUPPLIES NEEDED TO FOR YOUR DIY Christmas Decor
- 8 x 11 or 9 x 12 plain wood board
- Decor Art white
- Burnt Umber Acrylic Paint
- Wood Biscuits size #10
- Baby Wipes
- IOD Stamp: Kindest Regards
- Brayer
- Black ink stamp pad
- Heat gun
- Mini Christmas Tree Tinsel Wire Form (Dollar Tree)
- Hot glue
- Paper Towel/Toilet Paper Roll
- Craftyrific Faux Leather on Etsy
- White Chalk Paint
- Deco Art Acrylic Paint: Glorious Gold
- Paintbrush
- Holly Berry Pick
- Puppy Pads
STEPS:
1 – Grab your 8×11 wooden board. Wipe clean of any debris.
2 – Take a small amount of Burnt Umber acrylic paint and Art Deco white and mix together on a small plate/coffee filter. It makes the best color! Tip* You can skip this step if you prefer!
3 – Squirt your board with a bit of water and with a baby wipe, cover your wood board by applying your paint mixture giving it a bleached white look. Be sure to get all of your sides.
4 – Grab your IOD Stamp: Kindest Regards. Be sure to condition your stamp with100 grit sanding block if you are using it for the very first time. Tip* If you don’t have this stamp, you can always Mod Podge scrapbook paper or use old hymnals as well as we used in the DIY Wood Christmas Tree.
5 – With your Brayer roller, apply a thin and consistent layer of black ink to your large IOD stamp.
6 – Carefully apply to your 8 x 11 or 9 x 12 wooden board, pressing firmly and carefully so it doesn’t smear. Rub your fingers across the back to be sure it is applied throughout. Tip* It doesn’t have to be perfect so don’t stress.
7 – Let it dry completely. Use a heat gun to speed up the process. Set aside.
8 – Grab your mini tinsel Christmas Tree from Dollar Tree, and remove all of the tinsel leaving you with just the wire form base. Remove ribbon, as well.
9 – Eyeball where you will want to place your wired Christmas tree form on your board. Hot glue in place. Tip* Be sure to leave a bit of room at the top of your tree on the board.
10 – Grab a paper towel/toilet paper roll tube and trim off a section to serve as your tree trunk. Tip* Be as creative as you want for your trunk: cork from wine bottle sticks tied with jute, a Jenga block, etc.
11 – With your faux leather, cut out a small section to cover your toilet paper roll.
12 – With a bit of hot glue, secure it in place. Hold tight for a bit.
13 – Hot glue directly on your board and add your new faux leather trunk to the base of the wire Christmas tree form.
14 – Beginning at the bottom of your tree wire, you will cover up your green form with your wood biscuits. Use your hot glue to secure your first layer of wood biscuits to your form. Tip* Be sure to glue the biscuits directly in the back and center as you apply to your wire form.
15 – Apply a second layer of wood biscuits, resting in between the spaces of the first layer added. Hold in place. You will repeat for 4 rows, adding biscuits and gluing directly to the biscuit layer as you go.
16 – As you are adding your biscuits, be sure to work your way up. Pay attention to the edges to keep the tree shape. Use the sides of the wire form to help with this.
17 – Hot glue will be your friend for this project. So make sure you have lots of glue handy!
18 – Once you get to row 5 on your tree form, begin adding your biscuits underneath the layer you have just added. This is to make sure your Christmas tree is not too fat and properly proportioned, sticking them in there where needed.
19 – Begin layering again as you work your way to the top. Add any extra biscuits you need to fill in. Play with placement and eyeball what looks best.
20 – Use a heat gun to help melt all your excess glue strings that are all over your project! We know there are a lot.
21 – Once you have applied all of your wood biscuits and are happy with the shape of your tree, grab a paintbrush and white chalk paint. Paint doing the dry brush technique, and lightly cover your biscuits. You do not need to cover completely unless you prefer that look.
22 – Add some bits of fancy with gold acrylic paint by continuing with the dry technique. Just add tiny bits here and there. Tip* Use the gold leaf technique to make it really pop!
23 – To add some fancy to your top and mix it up from our original Biscuit Christmas tree, grab a Christmas holly berry pick and decompose. Grab a few sprigs and berry sections with a wire cutter.
24 – Play with placement before you commit to gluing officially down to your board up top. Use your holly berries to add that pop of color. Hot glue in place.
This is just so fun to make and will definitely get you feeling the Christmas spirit, even if it is just summer!
