Make Your Own Patriotic Banner
If your home doesn’t have a spot to hang a DIY Patriotic Banner currently, then let me suggest you remodel, rebuild, or even remove a wall if necessary. HA! If you can’t tell, I love decorating with banners! Like, a lot! And although my first statement was a bit dramatic, let me assure you your home is most definitely perfect for this spirited little banner, exactly as it is! Especially one this cute and festive for Memorial Day, 4th of July, Veterans Day, and even Labor Day.

This red, white, and blue Vintage Americana beauty would look great in any doorway, on a mantle, entry room table, or even on a bookshelf. This simple little rustic craft is the perfect way to show your patriotic love for this country in your home in a budget-friendly, fun, and festive way.
Let me show you how to get this look with just a few simple steps. Grab your supplies, be sure to smile, and let’s get started!
SUPPLIES NEEDED TO MAKE YOUR PATRIOTIC BANNER:
- 3 Wooden Triangle Garland pieces- (the one I used in the project is discontinued but here is an alternative) –Garland
- Acrylic paint – color Truffle
- Popsicle Sticks
- Blue Painters tape – 1”
- DecoArt Americana colors – red, white, and blue
- Wooden Letters – Dollar Tree
- Copper Leaf Sheet
- Size Glue
- Paintbrushes
- Hot glue
- Baby Wipes
- Puppy Pads
STEPS:
1 – Grab your wooden triangle pieces, a small paintbrush, and your truffle paint. Apply a small amount to your wooden piece and rub it with a baby wipe, being sure to cover the entire front. This will give your garland a stained look, without all the mess of actually staining. I love this trick. Tip* You can skip this step and keep the raw wood or even paint it white. These are just ideas to help you be inspired. You decide what you like best!
2 – Next, stain your 10 small popsicle sticks too. Repeat using the baby wipe technique. Be sure to get all the sides as well. Tip* If you have the jumbo popsicle sticks, you can use those instead of the small ones and create your own larger stars as a different type of Patriotic Banner. You would not need the wood triangle pieces if you decide to do this step.
3 – Set aside to dry.
4 – Apply 1” painter’s tape on 1 of your wooden triangles to add some red stripes. It doesn’t have to be perfect. I don’t want it super thick, but instead keeping with the rustic vibe I was going with from the start. Repeat on 1 more of your triangles.
5 – Grab your red acrylic paint and water it down just a bit before you lightly add a thin amount onto your 2 striped wooden pieces.
6 – Using the same waterdown down technique, lightly brush on the blue acrylic paint on 1 of your triangles not covering entirely. Let dry.
7 – With your Size Glue and a small paintbrush, add a thin layer to your wooden letters, U S A. It should be a bit tacky.
8 – Dry a bit with your heat gun.
9 – Pull a copper leaf sheet and carefully remove it from its packaging. With the shimmery side down, apply it to the tacky glued side of your wooden letters. Cover your letters entirely. Tip* This stuff gets everywhere, so be patient.
10 – To help burnish the copper to the letter, grab your small paintbrush and rub it in if any of the spots may not have had any glue. Tip* You could just paint these letters with gold acrylic paint if you prefer. It will still be great. Just be creative and have fun with it. Another Tip* You can save that excess gold leaf by placing it back into the paper backing it came in with the product packaging for another craft y’all!
11 – Place your copper U S A letters on your blue wooden triangle piece, playing with placement to get you a visual plan to begin. Hot glue in place when ready. Use a heat gun to blow away hot glue flyaways.
12 – Next grab your stained popsicle sticks and let’s practice first before we bring on the hot glue. Begin by laying 1 small stick down straight across. Bring the other 2 to make an X, touching the 1st stick laid down on its corners. Next, add your other 2 to form a V on top to make a complete star. Once you feel comfortable in these steps, add your hot glue by repeating the steps to form your completed star. Repeat to make 2 whole stars. Tip* Be careful not to glue your stars to your table as I did! Ha!
13 – Set your pieces out on your workspace and grab your desired amount of jute. Hot glue a tiny bit on the ends to help you weave it through your triangular garland pieces. You can add your jute so it goes through on the top so it adds a little texture. Next, add one of your stars. Repeat as you weave your patriotic banner pieces together.
14 – Make your jute as short or as long as you need to help you decorate the desired space in your home. I like it long so I have options to hang it in several spaces in my home for years to come. Tip* You can add as many of these pieces as you like in order to properly decorate your home with this Vintage American vibe!
I can not get over how cute this patriotic banner turned out! Its rustic vibe is everything I dreamed it would be and more. It will look so adorable in my front entryway paired up with some faux red, white, and blue florals. Maybe even a burlap-covered mason jar to keep with that Vintage Americana vibe. And you know I won’t forget to add an American flag somewhere in that space too! AHHHH, I love it.
I am so excited to see how yours turned out! Leave a comment and let me know what you think. Man, I am proud to be an American, and super proud of this little banner too! ! Happy crafting y’all. Until next time!
